The history of the “Gailtal Valley white maize“
“Gailtal Valley white maize“ - saved from extinction and recultivated by maize farmer Sepp
The “Gailtal Valley white maize“ is an ancient maize variety, which has remained unaltered for centuries and had almost been forgotten. A mountain guide, nature lover and passionate farmer rediscovered the seeds on his farm. The ancient maize variety had to make way for more high-yield hybrid varieties before Sepp Brandstätter started to look for suitable soils and recultivated this maize variety again in the Gailtal Valley. This robust and absolutely genetically unmodified and gluten free maize variety grows now again without the use of any artificial fertiliser but with much idealism and dedication around Brandstätter‘s farm in Würmlach. The harvest of the seed material by hand guarantees the purity of the seeds, thus maintaining the high quality.
During the tour and sampling on the field and the farm, the farmer happily demonstrates the difference to commercial maize varieties, but also the costlier and much healthier production of the fine, nutty polenta flour or maize semolina.
